Abstract: To understand star formation, one must understand the formation of multiple systems. The statistical properties of pre-main-sequence binary and higher-order systems are direct indicators of the mechanisms and initial conditions influential in their formation. We advocate the use of long-baseline optical interferometry to determine the multiplicity fraction of pre-main-sequence stars on AU scales to distinguish between competing formation models. We present the feasibility, statistical considerations, and scientific value of an interferometric multiplicity survey.
