Paper: Understanding the Sequences of Luminous Pulsating Red Giants

Abstract: Most of the period-luminosity sequences of luminous red giants consist of stars pulsating in different modes. However, the period ratios in individual multimode pulsators do not correspond to the period ratios of adjacent sequences. It is argued that this is because, at a given luminosity, the stars on the different sequences have different masses. An evolutionary scheme in the period-luminosity plane is described.
