Abstract: Any observation taken with a ground-based telescope is affected by absorption, emission and scattering of light arising within the Earth's atmosphere. The size of the effect depends on its composition and the physical state of the involved molecular species, and is usually highly variable on time scales from seconds to decades rendering the prediction of exposure times and the removal of this influence from observations a challenging matter. Here we present a progress report on our work on an improved new model of the Earth's atmosphere based on theoretical calculations and newly available measurements and data from ground- and space-based Earth science facilities.
