Abstract: We give an overview about our work on neutron star atmosphere modeling. The model atmospheres and synthetic spectra are used to analyse observations of thermal X-ray spectra of central compact objects in supernova remnants and X-ray bursting neutron stars in accreting binary systems. The results constrain mass and radius of neutron stars. Comparing the results to theoretical mass-radius relations allows to probe the equation of state in the neutron star cores, where mass densities several times the nuclear density are encountered.
