Abstract: |
We created the app “Totality by Big Kid Science” to help people plan for and learn about the 2017 eclipse. We have since updated it for future eclipses and to provide more general educational information that should be useful even when there is no eclipse; we have also added a Spanish-language option within the app. The app is completely free, with no ads and no paid upgrades; moreover, we purchased and donated more than 100,000 pairs of eclipse glasses to schools in conjunction with the initial app release. In this paper, I will describe the app, the process that led to its creation, and lessons learned along the way that may be of use not only for future eclipses but also to others seeking to create their own educational apps. |
