Abstract: On August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse moved west to east across the United States, covering fourteen states. This rare special event required extensive planning by state transportation agencies across the country, not just due to the effects of darkness, but also in light of the unusual and altered travel patterns across the country's entire transportation network. Evaluating how state and local agencies managed the traffic operations, communicated with the traveling public and planned for the altered travel patterns gives us an insight around successful strategies, not just for future eclipses, but for understanding the transportation system as a whole.
