Abstract: A Survey of Astronomy laboratory course made use of a smartphone planetarium app to track the motion of Mars before and after its 13 October 2020 opposition with the Earth. The concept of retrograde motion, which takes place during opposition, is defined. The properties of the app and the familiarization procedure with it for the students are discussed. The Lab procedure making use the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet for a graphical analysis is outlined. The retrograde motion is gradually revealed as a pattern of motion on the sky.
