Abstract: In this interactive session participants will have the opportunity to work with other instructors who are interested in creating or improving their online classes. We will provide resources and examples of best practices in developing online instructional materials for courses that range from single online classes with a dozen students, to larger Massive Open Online Classes (MOOCs) with tens of thousands of learners. We will focus on the practical aspects of course development. We will summarize the difference in demographics and motivation between typical MOOC learners and students in the Astro 101 classroom. We will demonstrate tools for creating videos that are useful with a small budget and no studio. We will discuss methods for developing quizzes and writing assignments that can be successfully implemented and graded by individual instructors or using peer review systems. We will also provide opportunities for participants to work together to share ideas and ask questions from their own specific learning environments.
