Abstract: This presentation is part of the Astro 101 Thread, topic 5 Students Working in Small Groups. This abstract is for my allocated time during a 50-minute panel/ interactive session with other presenters. In this session you will try some of the tools I've been using for four years in both my synchronous and my asynchronous classes to promote student engagement with the subject material. I will show how I have succeeded and failed at encouraging small group work and team projects throughout the quarters since March 2020. Topics will include better class discussion threads, equitable video conference class participation, Canvas surveys, the use of team roles in asynchronous or virtual classwork, Google Slides worksheets, and accessibility. I will also introduce the module ("What is Science?") my Chemistry colleague Dr. Jessica Pikul and I created, which teaches students to have scientific discussions, and use data to support their conclusions, in a class with no math prerequisite.
