Abstract: |
We review some basic statistics about community colleges in the U.S. and about the teaching of astronomy in those institutions. We discuss some of the challenges, including the nature of the students, the lack of dormitories, and the use of “contingent faculty” — part-time instructors, who are paid less well, rarely given offices, and often have to teach at several colleges to make ends meet. We also discuss some of the reasons dedicated instructors enjoy teaching at this level. |
