Abstract: The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) plans to compile a sample of ≈ 100,000 quasars during its five years of operation. The SDSS First Data Release Quasar Catalog presents five-band CCD photometry, accurate positions, and digital spectra for 16,713 objects (15,786 SDSS discoveries) found over 1360 deg2. The redshifts range between 0.08 and 5.41. This paper discusses the progress of the SDSS Quasar Survey and reviews some of its science results.
