Abstract: A careful examination of the BATSE data suggests that afterglow emission, presumably due to a forward external shock, may initially peak in γ-rays and may overlap in time with the prompt Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) emission. We discuss the properties of extended emission tails observed in BATSE GRBs and the possibility that the afterglow flux may initially be variable.
