Abstract: We present new tools for improving our abilities for disentangling relevant stellar population parameters in early-type galaxies. To develop these tools we use stellar population synthesis models predicting spectra for old and intermediate-aged stellar populations at moderately high resolution. We propose new indices to lift the age/metallicity degeneracy, which do not need to be restricted to standard spectroscopic definitions. We use this methodology to explore various approaches that might provide further clues on galaxy formation and evolution.
