Abstract: In the last decade, optical and near-infrared surveys played a crucial role to unveil and decipher the main evolutionary trends which characterize galaxy evolution over a wide interval of cosmic time. The purpose of this paper is to review some of the major results on the nature and properties of the galaxy populations identified at cosmological distances in the optical/near–IR, and on their star formation, mass assembly and metallicity cosmic histories.
