Abstract: I briefly review some recent results from the deepest surveys of the cosmic X-ray background with the Chandra and XMM-Newton missions, focusing on studies of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Topics covered include (1) the challenges and results of source follow-up, (2) X-ray absorption in deep-field AGNs, (3) the number-density and spectral evolution of AGNs, (4) AGN selection completeness, and (5) the X-ray AGN content of distant infrared and submillimeter galaxies. I also describe some outstanding problems and prospects for current and future X-ray missions.
