Abstract: The application of giant H II regions as distance indicators is reviewed. The diameter-luminosity class relation, the velocity widths of giant H II regions, and the emission-line luminosities of giant H II regions are discussed. It is shown that giant H II regions together with H II regionlike dwarf galaxies may provide an important tool for the calibration of the extragalactic distance scale.
