Abstract: It is argued that the luminosity - line width distance estimator can be used to determine the distances to individual field galaxies in a way that avoids Malmquist bias. A new calibration of the luminosity - line width relation based on CCD photometric observations of almost complete cluster samples is presented. The scatter at near-infrared wavelengths appears to be only about 0.25 mag. It has been suggested that the scatter in the luminosity - line width relation is large, the apparent increase in the Hubble ratio with distance is an artifact of Malmquist bias, and H(O) has a value in the vicinity of 50 km/s/Mpc. It is concluded here that the scatter in this distance estimator is small, Malmquist bias can be avoided, the apparent increase in the Hubble ratio with distance still seen is due to a local velocity anomaly, and H(O) is about 90 km/s/Mpc.
