Abstract: The recent identification and interpretation of strong IR emission lines are discussed in terms of their contributions to the analysis of stellar atmospheres. A 1.6-micron stellar line allows a new level of Fe II to be defined, some Cr II lines near 9000 A are introduced, and the enhancement of an Fe II line at 9997 A by means of cascading fluorescence is proposed. The interpretation of these IR emission lines can provide detailed information about atomic processes in stellar envelopes.
