Abstract: This review restricts itself to observations of red giants in galaxies beyond the Galaxy and its nearby companions. Three types of observations are reviewed: (1) observations of resolved objects (particularly color-magnitude diagrams of nearby galaxies such as M31 and M32, and multifilter detection of carbon stars in the Local Group and beyond); (2) observations of partially resolved giants using power spectra techniques; and (3) observations in integrated light (population synthesis). It is concluded that an area of particular interest, both to stellar and extragalactic astronomers, is the study of the luminous, cool, very metal-rich giants that are observed in the Galactic bulge, and which are inferred to exist in the central regions of many other galaxies.
