Abstract: IRAS photometry and low resolution spectra are available for 170 planetary nebulae. The dominant source of far-infrared radiation is the remnant dust shell from the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) mass loss. A preliminary attempt to model the IRAS data for these nebulae, by following the evolution of the dust shell and of the central star with radiative transfer calculations is described. The models strongly suggest that the Schonberner post-AGB stellar evolution models evolve too slowly to match the observations.
