Abstract: |
Synthetic models of the horizontal branch (HB) have shown that the Sandage period-shift effect and the difference in mean-Pab (the periods of type ab RR Lyrae variables) between the Oosterhoff groups may be due to the evolution of HB stars. It was not clear, however, that these models will produce the observed dichotomy in mean-Pab, rather than a continuum of values, including values intermediate to the two groups. Progress in understanding the origin of the dichotomy is examined here. |
