Abstract: R CrB stars have been suggested to originate either as the result of a merging of two white dwarfs, or of a final helium-shell flash in a single, Post-AGB star. The two scenarios are here compared to each other and to observations, with particular emphasis on the question of the detailed surface composition and on the association of R CrB stars with planetary nebulae. It is concluded that the final flash scenario can better account for most R CrB stars and related objects.
