Abstract: We present the preliminary results of a new 21 cm H I survey of the RMC. If the central cluster of the Rosette Nebula (NGC 2244) is at a distance of 1600 pc, structures as small as 2 pc can be resolved. The H I column density map reaches a minimum at and north of the H II region, relative to (alpha, delta) as delineated in H-alpha images. The H II region is surrounded by three denser regions of atomic hydrogen to the south and east. The atomic gas is compared to the molecular component using the Bell Labs CO Survey of the area. Approximately 30 molecular 'clumps' were identified from the integrated (C-13)O maps. The H2 mass of the clumps ranges from a few to several hundred solar masses and the sizes from 2 to 7 pc. A lower limit to the total H2 mass of the mapped complex is estimated at 2.9 x 10 exp 4 solar masses. The H I column density map shows that the denser regions reach their maxima near the minima in the CO maps. It is possible that these dense H I regions delineate atomic/molecular interfaces where the photodestruction of H2 into H I is balanced by its production.
