Abstract: Aperture synthesis radio continuum observations of nearby spiral galaxies reveal the presence of a number of discrete sources superposed on an extended disk component and on arms of diffuse emission. Most of these sources are HII regions; only a small fraction have been identified with supernova remnants. The properties of the population of these discrete sources in a few nearby galaxies is reviewed. Comparisons with data at other wavelengths are also reviewed.
