Abstract: The 1-cm spectral lines of NH3 have been used successfully over the last few years in studying the interstellar medium of the Galaxy. These lines have been shown to be particularly useful in VLA studies of star forming regions where the temperature, column density, and velocity structures can be traced at arc second resolutions. We have now successfully imaged extragalactic NH3 with 5 arcsec resolution in the nearby spiral galaxy IC342. The NH3 emission appears to be closely associated with the innermost portions of a nuclear bar seen in CO, apparently tracing the hotter and denser material. The NH3 lines therefore appear to be new spectroscopic tools for VLA studies of the external galaxies.
