Abstract: A brief account is given of problems associated with pre-SN evolution in classical Type Ia supernovae, with a view of those aspects of this phenomenon requiring further study. Possible links to cataclysmic variables are reexamined in the context of proposed 'hibernation' scenarios, and a scenario is developed in which SNs would act to promote, rather than hinder, the evolution of cataclysmic variables toward an explosive final stage. Attention is given to double degenerate progenitors and to schemes in which the progenitor is shrouded by some hydrogen. Recently identified Type Ib and Ic SNs are linked to binary evolution.
