Abstract: |
UIMAGE is an IDL-based software package designed to support the analysis of data from NASA's Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE). The package will also work with sky-map data-sets from other experiments which are also in the unfolded skycube format. The COBE project is using data in this form in order to avoid losses in the data's resolution which would occur if it was translated into another projection. Though UIMAGE will re-project data and allow users to manipulate the projections, any actual calculations are always performed by using the data in the original skycube format. UIMAGE is a menu-based system, and can run on both X-window terminals and on traditional Tektronix-compatible terminals (certain functionality however is only accessible from X-windows). One advantage of a menu-based system is that guest investigators can get a quick acquaintance with the available data and functionality without being required to immediately become familiar with the syntax required to invoke local software. Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), under the scientific guidance of the COBE Science Working Group, is responsible for its development and operation. |
