Abstract: We compare the properties of synchrotron outbursts in two typical objects, the quasar 3C 273 and the microquasar GRS1915+105. The comparison is based on the assumption that shock waves in a relativistic jet are at the origin of the observed infrared-to-radio flaring behaviour. The properties of a typical outburst are derived from the observations by fitting the lightcurves with a series of synchrotron outbursts evolving according to a shock-in-jet model. The similarity of the outburst evolution in GRS1915+105 as compared to 3C 273 gives strong support to the idea that the same physical processes are at play in the jet of quasars and microquasars, but on different scales.
