Abstract: Detailed modeling of the chemistry in the disks around Vega-like stars reveals that photodissociation is indeed capable of destroying CO molecules in the circumstellar environment. The amount of dissociation strongly depends on the disk mass, on the dust extinction properties, and on the effective temperature of the star. The non-detection of CO therefore does not necessarily imply a general gas depletion.
