Abstract: Two observations of U Gem with FUSE confirm that the WD is heated by the outburst and cools during quiescence to about 30,000K. In an observation at the end of an outburst, the best uniform temperature WD model fits indicate a temperature of ~46,000 K for log g=8.5. Improved fits can be obtained if there is a hotter, heated portion of the WD with a temperature of 70,000K occupying 25% of the surface. In this case, the remainder of the WD has a temperature of 30,000K, essentially that observed for the entire WD in mid-quiescence. The second component does not appear to be rotating rapidly, in contrast to what is expected in some models of the second component. Surprisingly, simple WD model fitting requires higher metallicity at mid-quiescence. But there is strong orbital phase dependent absorption in the mid-quiescence spectrum, most likely due to gas above the disk. It is possible that such material compromises abundances estimates in all the mid-quiescence spectra.
