Abstract: |
We analyze the hypothesis of accretion disk formation around the central star of preplanetary nebulae, due to mass transfer from a low mass companion. We find significant restrictions in the characteristics of the binary systems that may lead to disk formation. Only low mass companions, after a dynamically unstable mass transfer process, may lead to disk formation. Under reasonable simplifying assumptions, we estimate the resulting accretion disk properties and evolution, and discuss their potential role in driving collimated outflows. |
