Abstract: |
We report the results of a complete spatio-kinematical study of the hypersonic knots and bright core of the Engraved Hourglass planetary nebula, MyCn18, using the Manchester echelle spectrometer combined with 3.9m Anglo-Australian telescope. A continuum subtracted image reveals the knots to be confined to within ''of the bipolar axis of the nebula. The relative radial velocity of the knots versus their apparent angular distance from the star is plotted for this complete sample. A nova-like explosive event in the core of MyCn18 is suggested as a possible mechanism for generating these remarkable knots. |
