Abstract: |
Distances to binary stars determined by the orbital parallax method and taken from the literature are compared with the Hipparcos distances to the same stars. For distances of less than ~ 100 pc the agreement between the orbital parallax and Hipparcos distances is generally excellent. But a discussion of the distance to the Pleiades (d = 135 pc) shows that at distances greater than ~ 100 pc the Hipparcos distances are less accurate than claimed. It is found that the presently available orbital parallax-based distances span the range 10 ≤ d ≤ 300 pc and have a typical accuracy of ±2%. Prospects for improvement both in the number of distances measured by orbital parallax and their accuracy are good. |
