Abstract: |
We report the measurement of chemical abundances in 35 low-mass main sequence stars. We measured the abundances of 12 elements in Kapteyn's Star, an M dwarf which is probably the closest halo star to the Sun. We measured [Fe/H] = −0.98, which is about 0.5 dex smaller than that measured in the one previously published abundance measurement which used atomic lines. We also report the measurement of Fe and Ti abundances in 34 additional M and K dwarfs using atomic absorption lines, most of which were in the 8000 Å < λ < 8850 Å range. The stars have −2.39 ≤ [Fe/H] ≤ +0.21. In our analysis, we have taken advantage of the recent improvements in the calculation of model atmospheres for these stars, which should make our abundances more reliable than those from the few other studies. We plan to use the measured metallicities to calibrate photometric and low-resolution spectral indices for low mass dwarfs, which will allow metallicity estimates to be made of a much larger sample of stars. |
