The near-infrared orbital light curve of A0620--00 showed an asymmetric, double-humped modulation with a larger peak at orbital phase 0.75 when we observed it in 1995 and 1996. The shape of the light curve was constant throughout our observations, arguing against superhumps and star spots as the main source of the asymmetry at that time. The light curve is well fitted by models incorporating ellipsoidal variations from the mass-losing star plus a bright spot on the accretion disk around the black hole. From these fits we limit the orbital inclination to 38circ < i < 75circ and the mass of the black hole to 3.3 Modot < Mbh < 13.6 Modot. |
