Abstract: High-resolution X-ray spectroscopy with the Chandra low energy transmission grating spectrometer (LETGS) provides an unprecedented diagnostic tool for the hot accretion plasma and the settling flow in the accretion column of magnetic cataclysmic variables (mCVs). We show first results from our analysis of spin-phase resolved X-ray spectroscopy of the two prototype magnetic CVs, AM Her and PQ Gem. The LETGS spectra cover the wavelength range 2--170Å with a spectral resolution λ/Δ λ = 200--3000. For the first time, absorption structures in the soft X-ray component of the heated white-dwarf atmosphere are revealed and individual emission lines of H- and He-like O and N ions including the density sensitive components of the He-like triplets are resolved in the hard X-ray component originating from the settling flow. In addition, phase dependent Doppler-shifts of the emission lines are detected providing detailed information on the geometry of the accretion funnel.
