Abstract: I will present the results of a STIS spectroscopic study of the nuclei of 20 nearby Seyfert 2 galaxies. All are Seyfert 2s which have clearly detectable nuclei in WFPC2 images not obviously blocked by interstellar dust. The small (0.2-arcsec) slit of STIS provids a factor of 20-50 increase in contrast between the active nucleus and the surrounding starlight. We are searching for weak broad H-alpha lines in direct light and evidence of a blue continuum from either hot stars or perhaps the elusive "featureless continuum". Implications for understanding if we need a Seyfert 2 class will be discussed. Note to the SOC: This is a cycle 10 project currently in progress. We should have most of our spectra in hand and analyzed by the meeting, and are just now getting excellent and exciting spectra.
