Abstract: |
VLT/UVES spectroscopy of the central region of NGC 1140, in conjunction with archival HST/ACS images, were used to determine the virial mass of cluster 6 from Hunter et al. We obtain (2.3±1.0)×107MSolar, three times larger than the previously published value for the cluster’s photometric mass of 7.1+0.4−0.8 ×106MSolar. The virial light-to-mass ratio is also well below that predicted for Kroupa or Salpeter initial mass functions. These discrepancies likely arise from the fact that the cluster is not virialised, and could be interacting with nearby cluster 7. |
