We present a discussion of lessons learned during the development of SAOImage DS9. Starting with general observations on scientific software development, we discuss our design and implementation cycle, allocation of effort and resources, keys to our success, overall strategies that have worked well (and those that have not), and future challenges. We hope our experience will be of use to other small software development projects. |
