Additional information is frequently required to describe database table contents and make it understandable to users. For this reason, the Multimission Archive at Space Telescope (MAST) creates description files for each table/catalog. After trying various XML and CSV formats, we finally chose VOTable. These files are easy to update via an HTML form, easily read using an XML parser such as (in our case) the PHP5 SimpleXML extension, and have found multiple uses in our data access/retrieval process. |
