Abstract: |
Both the Michelson Doppler Imager (MDI) and the Global Oscillation
Network Group (GONG) projects produce daily seismic maps of
surface magnetic activity on the non-visible hemisphere of the Sun.
The technique has proven useful to detect and follow large
active regions before they appear to face the Earth. This
work demonstrates an improvement in the detection capability
of the technique by applying the results of new research.
We calibrate the daily far-side maps in terms of characteristics
of the active region, such as total area and magnetic flux
strength, apply a relationship between the strength of the
persistent signal and the success rate to automatically
highlight possible candidates, and remove solar-cycle variations
to stabilize the signal.
