Abstract: |
The Schmidt Law has become synonymous with the parameterized rate of
star formation in galaxies. We present an overview of the evolution of
this idea from its origin in studies of the Milky Way to its
application to spatially resolved galaxies, and then its apparent
transformation to a global relation. We also look at its evolution
from being a fitting formula into a predictive equation, and finally
how it has been interpreted and recast in a theoretical context and
then also in a computational setting for galaxy evolution modeling. |
