Abstract: |
Rich information on the formation process of the Milky Way is contained
in the distribution function (DF) of the stellar halo.
Here, we show how solar-neighbour observations of halo stars can constrain the DF of stellar halo.
We model the inner halo of the Milky Way with a new family of DF models.
We find that DF models that satisfy
local constraints such as the observed density slope and velocity dispersions at the solar neighbourhood
would exhibit distinct marginal energy and eccentricity distributions,
depending on the global nature of the DF.
Comparison of our results with recent observation by SDSS suggests that
the velocity dispersion of the inner halo is isotropic at the center of the Milky Way
and it becomes highly radially-biased at large Galactocentric distance. |
