Abstract: |
Having a very wide field of view at prime focus, Subaru is distinguished and
uniquely positioned to do wide-field surveys for Galactic Archaeology (GA)
science cases requiring its large aperture. Here we present our plan
for such wide-field GA surveys using a wide-field imager, Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC),
and a wide-field multi-object spectrograph, Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS).
HSC will see first light in 2012. The basic concept of PFS has been approved
in the Subaru community and its commissioning will be in around 2015. The primary
scientific driver for both of these wide-field instruments is cosmology, but
they will offer us important opportunities to conduct strategic GA surveys as well,
especially in synergy with Gaia and other upcoming projects related to GA
in the next decade. |
