Abstract: We briefly outline the SkyMapper Southern Sky Survey and its use in the development of a series of programs designed to constrain the structure and evolution of the Milky Way. The coming decade will see a number of large programs for galactic archaeology, amongst them the HERMES program and the Gaia-ESO survey. Through a unique filter set optimised for stellar astrophysics, SkyMapper will provide input to the observing plans of both major programs. In these proceedings we demonstrate with follow-up spectroscopy of metal-poor star candidates the ability of SkyMapper to find these rare targets.
