Abstract: High quality photometric and spectroscopic data for recent Galactic novae are used to revisit some current arguments about novae based on their optical observations. We consider in particular (1) interstellar atomic lines and diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) as tools to derive the extinction and distance to novae, (2) the origin of absorption line systems observed during the optically thick phase, (3) the true existence and robustness of the MMRD relation between absolute magnitude and decline time, and finally (4) the 3D complexity of nova ejecta and the (absence of) correlation between expansion velocity and decline time.
