Abstract: |
Polarization provides useful diagnostics for circumstellar disks, most of which are not easily obtainable by any other observational means. Depending on the systems being studied, observations may include imaging polarimetry, broad-band photo-polarimetry, or spectropolarimetry at low- or high-resolution. For spectropolarimetry, both line and continuum polarization provide information about the circumstellar environment, but these generally are separate and very complementary approaches. Here we discuss some of the observational diagnostics available from various types of polarimetry, consider the specific cases of classical Be stars, B[e] stars, and Herbig Ae/Be stars, and comment on future opportunities for polarimetry to contribute to the study of circumstellar disks across the HR diagram. |
