Abstract: We calculate the full evolution of 1 MM ≤ 8 M stars from the pre-main-sequence to the Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) phase, and we follow the formation and growth of dust particles in the circumstellar envelope. These models give a theoretical interpretation of the so-called extreme stars, the most obscured AGB stars in the Large Magellanic Clouds observed by Spitzer. The main diagonal sequence traced by LMC extreme stars in the [3.6]–[4.5] vs. [5.8]–[8.0] and [3.6]–[8.0] vs. [8.0] planes are nicely fit by an evolutionary sequence of carbon star models, surrounded by solid carbon grains. The reddest objects are the most obscured, in the final evolutionary AGB phases. Stars of mass M > 3 M are surrounded by silicates and populate the region [3.6]–[4.5] < 1.
