Abstract: The 2017 total solar eclipse was a high-profile opportunity for nationwide public education. To that end, the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum held two full-day events, distributed free eclipse glasses, gave media interviews, and hosted eclipse-day viewings at multiple locations. While interacting with the public we encountered misconceptions about whether it is safe to view the Sun, where it is possible to observe the eclipse, and what people would see. We also had to check our assumptions that people already knew what causes the eclipse, how long it lasts, and when to use eye protection. We continuously refined how we communicated with visitors based on what we learned from them. We present the following essential points to convey about eclipses, which may be useful to future educators.
