Abstract: |
The non-profit media organization Science Friday used digital, radio, social, and live interactive multimedia to inform the public about the 2017 solar eclipse. In addition to running a traditional multiplatform awareness campaign in early 2017, Science Friday generated a content series of fast-turnaround, late-breaking multimedia to address misunderstandings, concerns, and questions that surfaced in June, July, and August 2017, based on informal audience feedback. The most successful element of this late-breaking campaign was a Facebook Live broadcast illustrating safe-viewing practices and alternatives to eclipse glasses for solar eclipse observation. Here I provide a brief overview of Science Friday's eclipse content, and an in-depth look at the viral success of Science Friday's Facebook Live broadcast and web guide for viewing the solar eclipse without eclipse glasses. |
